Your roof’s shingles are the unsung heroes of your home. They are the first line of defence against damage from the harsh Canadian weather.
With regular maintenance, asphalt shingles can last 15-20 years and metal roofing or shingles can last 40-50 years.
To make sure your roof and shingles last as long as possible, we recommend following these quick maintenance tips twice a year, once in late spring (April / May), and once in the fall (October – before the frost).
Quick-tip guide for maintaining your shingles.
Regular maintenance of your home’s shingles can not only keep the interior of your home safe from leaks, but also prolong the requirement for a full re-shingling of your roof.
1. Look for signs of curling, lifting or breakage.
From outside your home, look up at your roof to see if there are any inconsistencies. If you notice anything, you can either use a ladder to safely get a closer look, or call our L.B.H. or Onoway locations for a roof inspection.
2. Professional repairs.
Make sure to seek professional advice about repairing or replacing your shingles. Expert roofers can make sure that your roof has the proper slope, ventilation, flashing and barriers for a long-lasting roof. Give us a call if you have any questions about your roof or shingles.
3. Cut back branches.
Tree coverage creates a nice ambiance and can help shade your home from the hot sun, but when branches and leaves start touching your roof, it can cause damage – either by eventually falling off, or blocking the water’s path to the gutter.
4. Clear out gutters.
In the fall, it’s essential to clear out your eavestroughs regularly – especially right before the winter frost arrives, so that any melting snow throughout the winter and early spring doesn’t back-up and damage the drip-edge and leak into your home.
In the spring, with birds seeking out nesting spots, and uncovered leaves and twigs in the early spring thaw don’t cause the same fate to your home.
You can even get a gutter guard to help prevent your gutters from getting clogged and backing up.
